When students are self-directed, making choices around how, where, and when to access and demonstrate their learning, they are more likely to succeed.  Ongoing assessment helps both the student and the teacher identify where the student is in their progression towards identified learning targets.

In order to help all students become career and college ready, Rutland Central Supervisory Union is committed to helping every learner meet proficiency in clear learning goals and transfer understanding in a variety of authentic applications.

The purpose of proficiency-based learning is to create self-directed learners by:
  • Enabling students to track their progress by aligning learning with a set of common proficiencies and clarifying what success looks like.
  • Providing accurate, regular feedback to students around their performance toward meeting the proficiencies.
  • Giving students choices around when, where, and how to access and demonstrate their learning of the proficiencies.

The SBAC ELA and Math assessments, administered in grades 3-9, measure students’ academic knowledge and skills relative to the national Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy and Math. The SBAC Science assessments, administered in grades 5, 8, and 11, measure students’ academic knowledge and skills relative to the national Next Generation Science Standards. Adopted by the state of Vermont, FitnessGram,® an assessment used in grades 4, 7, and 10, allows teachers, administrators, parents, and most importantly, students, to understand and make positive changes to their health, and in turn build healthy habits.

In addition to these state assessments, the GRCSU also uses several common assessments such as STAR and MAP to assess ELA and Math skills in elementary, middle, and high school. Data collected from these and other ongoing formative assessment helps teachers and administrators intervene on both individual and school-wide levels in order to optimize learning for students.” clone_title=”” line=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
